How should a piano be maintained and cared for?

by linzz 25 Mar 2024

1.Do not place the piano against a wall near the window

The piano casing is made of wood, and placing it near a window exposes it to direct sunlight, humidity, and sudden changes in temperature, which can have adverse effects.

2.Keep away from heat sources

The piano should be kept away from sources of heat such as radiators and heaters to prevent damage to the external and internal components, resulting in a decrease in touch and sound quality. Therefore, it is important to avoid damage to the piano from heat radiation and hot air.

3.Pay attention to sudden changes in temperature

If the temperature in a cold room suddenly rises, moisture will condense on the strings and other metal components, leading to rust. Components made of wire or felt may also deform due to moisture absorption, causing sluggish key action or noise. While humidity is a concern, excessive dryness is even more detrimental. When the air is too dry, wooden and felt components will shrink and deform. Even glued soundboards and ribs may delaminate, and slight component deformations can produce noise.

4.Maintain cleanliness

Regularly use a soft cloth or feather duster to remove dust from the piano. Avoid using cleaning agents containing alcohol to wipe the piano and keyboard to prevent corrosion or cracking of the finish and keys. Wipe the keyboard with a dry, soft cloth. If there are stains on the keyboard, use a slightly damp cloth to remove them. Develop the habit of playing the piano with clean fingers to keep the keyboard clean.

5.Piano tuning

Tuning involves tightening or loosening the piano strings to achieve the desired pitch. Each piano string bears a tension of about 90 kilograms, and after a period of playing, the tension of the strings will change, affecting the pitch. Maintaining good pitch not only prolongs the life of the piano but also prevents adverse effects on the player's listening ability, especially since children have more sensitive hearing than adults and it is the best time for them to develop pitch concepts.
