Ableton releases Move 1.3 update, adding USB audio input and MIDI polyphony

by linzz 01 Mar 2025

Ableton has quietly updated the Move hardware's software, adding two major features: users can now sample directly over the USB-C port, and send polyphonic MIDI signals to other hardware devices.

The USB-C audio input provides an easy way to quickly sample from computers, tablets, and smartphones. Add an interesting sound you found on your phone and simply connect a USB-C cable to easily get the audio signal. Found a weird and wonderful moment in the VCV Rack module? Turn it into a sample right away via USB. Not just computers and phones, this feature also works with the few hardware instruments that have built-in USB-C host capabilities — hopefully more devices will support it in the future.

If your iPhone or iPad uses a Lightning connector instead of USB-C, things are a little more complicated. Unfortunately, Lightning to USB-C adapters are not currently supported.

Another highly anticipated feature is that Move can now send polyphonic expression data via the MIDI output port, which can be used to control other hardware devices. Move isn't quite on par with LinnStrument, Osmose, or Ableton's own Push 3, but at least it doesn't lose that data, which is a nice improvement.

 1.3 version changelog:

➜You can now solo a track by holding down the Shift and Mute buttons simultaneously, then pressing the track button.

➜Longer items in the browser, such as sample or preset names, now scroll on the display so that the name is fully displayed.

➜When used as an audio interface, Move now outputs its built-in microphone and line inputs by default. Move's main output can still be selected in the settings; however, doing so will disable Move's speakers when a USB-C cable is connected.

➜When set as a MIDI output, Move now sends polyphonic aftertouch messages, allowing you to play more expressively when using an external MIDI controller.

➜A wider selection of presets is now available when creating a new Set.

➜Optimized upload speed to Ableton Cloud.

➜Triggered single-shot samples and long-release notes now stop when playback stops and the clip is retriggered. Additionally, the MIDI output sends an "All Sound Off" MIDI message (CC 120).
