Essential Summer Piano Care Tips: Guarding Against Humidity, Insects, and Heat

by linzz 06 Feb 2024
As summer, the season of unbearable heat, unknowingly arrives, a fellow musician recently left a comment asking: How should pianos be maintained in the summer?

1. In the southern regions where summer brings more rain, since most piano materials are made of wood, it is essential to guard against humidity. One can purchase some desiccants to place at the bottom of the piano to remove excess moisture.

2. Summer is the season for the proliferation of cockroaches and wood-eating insects. Pianos contain internal components like wool felt, making them particularly attractive to these pests. Taking effective measures against insects is crucial. Hanging insect repellents inside the piano, preferably wrapped in gauze, can effectively prevent damage caused by insects such as wood-eating pests and cockroaches.

3. With the hot weather, music enthusiasts often prefer practicing the piano in air-conditioned rooms for hours or even the entire day, keeping the air conditioner on. However, prolonged use of air conditioning can lead to excessively dry conditions for the piano. It is recommended to use a humidifier in the room or place a basin of water to increase the air's humidity. Generally, the humidity in the piano room should be maintained at the optimal range of 40%-60%.

4. Placement of the piano in summer should avoid proximity to windows to prevent exposure to sunlight. High temperatures can cause deformation of the piano's wood, affecting its lifespan.

5. Regular cleaning is crucial. If the piano is not played for an extended period, the casing or keyboard may accumulate dust. Use a piano cleaning cloth for wiping, avoiding the use of detergents as they may corrode the piano's surface (lacquer) and damage its appearance. In addition to the surface, dust may sometimes penetrate the piano's interior. It is recommended to use a small vacuum cleaner to clean it, ensuring it does not affect the piano's playability.

6. As commonly known, pianos undergo repetitive striking of the strings during long-term use. Due to the internal structural principles of the piano, not tuning it regularly can result in off-key notes or damage to internal components. Therefore, regular tuning is crucial, even during the summer; don't forget!
