Pedal Usage Guidelines for Piano Players

by linzz 22 Feb 2024
1. Avoid randomly pressing the pedal without a systematic approach. Determine when not to use the pedal, when to use it, which type of pedal to use, how long to sustain the pedal, and when to change the pedal position, according to the principles of pedal usage.

2. Do not use the pedal to mask deficiencies in finger technique. It's better to first master finger techniques without using the pedal, laying a foundation for later pedal-enhanced playing.

3. When using the sustain pedal, beginners must make the pressing and releasing actions clear. Ensure to press the pedal all the way down and release it (or change it) promptly.

4. A common mistake is insufficient action when changing pedals during staccato pedaling. Merely symbolic movements without fully lifting the pedal can result in a muddy sound where the sounds of the previous and current pedals blend together.

5. Another common mistake beginners make is related to foot movements. For instance, if the foot is not firmly against the pedal, it may create noise as the foot hits the pedal. Additionally, lifting the foot too high or losing control when the pedal is lifted can result in the pedal hitting the wood or the heel leaving the ground, or sliding off the pedal gradually.

6. If the pedal is not used for a long time, the right foot should be placed near the right pedal for easy access.

7. For beginners, the direct and staccato pedals are the two most basic pedal techniques. Practice both the simultaneous pressing and releasing of the direct pedal and the staccato pedal.

8. Avoid using only one pedal throughout to create a lively or grand atmosphere.
