Unveiling Guitar Diversity: Exploring the Distinctions Between Folk, Electric, and Classical Guitars

by linzz 24 Jan 2024

The guitar is a highly popular musical instrument with various styles and categories. Today, let's unveil the classification of guitars and understand the differences between folk, electric, and classical guitars.

Folk Guitar
Folk guitars use steel strings, have a narrow neck, and typically feature fourteen frets from the nut to the body (while classical guitars have only twelve frets). Some folk guitars may have a pickguard on the soundboard. Folk guitars are not only suitable for solo performances but are also well-suited for self-accompaniment, making them the most universally popular type of guitar.

Electric Guitar
Electric guitars are usually solid-bodied and generate different sound signals by cutting the magnetic lines in the pickups with guitar strings. These signals are then amplified through dedicated amplifiers. The serial effects processors and amplifiers for electric guitars can produce hundreds or even thousands of tones, making them suitable for playing light music or rock. The live effects are remarkable.

Classical Guitar
Classical guitars represent the most cautious and technically deep style, using nylon strings. Primarily used for playing classical music, they also accommodate a certain amount of modern classical pieces, such as classical, flamenco, jazz, and more. With delicate and versatile tones, rich polyphony, and the ability to perform multiple voices simultaneously, classical guitars can interpret music from different periods, styles, and ethnicities with ease. Appreciating classical music requires not only intuition – although many classical pieces are beautiful when intuitively appreciated – but also some effort to study in order to gradually understand the composer's intentions and the meaning of their works. People who have never seriously encountered classical music may find it challenging to understand and may become impatient.

With the above introduction, I believe everyone now has a more comprehensive understanding of folk, electric, and classical guitars. Regardless of the type of guitar, diligent practice and mastering basic skills will allow individuals to showcase their style in playing.
