Effective Piano Practice Techniques for Skill Improvement

by linzz 21 Feb 2024

Next, let's share some practice tips with everyone, hoping to help improve your piano learning efficiency.

01. Learn to 'play' with your brain

Make full use of your brain to think and summarize, find a practice method that suits you, and gradually develop the good habit of actively thinking during practice, thereby improving practice efficiency.

02. Learn to 'listen' with your ears

When practicing, use your ears to listen to whether the piece you are playing is correct, and use your ears to distinguish those gradually strengthening or weakening musical passages. Only by listening attentively to the music being played can you truly move the hearts of others.

03. Practice in segments repeatedly

You can divide the piece into small sections and practice playing them repeatedly. This is the most effective way to learn it. Practice each section until you are satisfied, then string the sections together for practice. This way, you will find it easier to master and learn to play faster.

04. Practice hands separately before coordinating both hands

The piano is one of the most expressive musical instruments, but many beginners have difficulty coordinating both hands when playing. When starting to learn to play with both hands simultaneously, the brain's attention is divided between the two hands. However, our hands need to control various finger movements, rhythms, etc., which causes attention to scatter, making the lack of coordination even more evident.

If we can use separate practice to focus all attention on one hand, allowing each finger to perform its role according to the correct fingerings and rhythms, then when playing with both hands together, it will be more harmonious. Therefore, separate hand practice at the beginning is to develop your fingers' perception of the music. However, continuing separate hand practice even after mastering the piece is crucial."
