Mastering Proper Piano Hand Position: Essential Tips and Common Mistakes

by linzz 21 Feb 2024

In daily practice, it is still necessary to develop a basic correct playing hand position, because once incorrect habits form, they will affect the quality of the performance, and it will be more difficult to correct them in the future.

Below are several common poor hand positions:

1. Finger Collapse: Typically, except for the thumb, which plays sideways, the other four fingers should always have three joints bent. If the first joint of the finger collapses, it will cause the fingertip to touch the key, preventing the smooth transmission of force to the keys, thus seriously affecting the strength and tone of the performance.

2. Concave Wrist: Performing with this hand position for an extended period can lead to wrist pain and injury because the wrist is not in a relaxed, naturally hanging position but is pressed down on the wrist nerves.

3. Raised Wrist: Raising the wrist too high during practice makes the movements during performance awkward and inconvenient, causing fatigue in the arm and wrist.

4. Palm Joint Collapse: Many beginners tend to have this problem, mainly due to the third joint of the finger being too flat or lacking support, resulting in the inability to lift the fingers and apply force effectively.

Suggestions for hand position:

1. Keep the fingers upright when playing, ensuring that the palm joint does not collapse, and keep the shoulders relaxed for a comfortable performance.

2. For children with improper hand positions, it is best to practice slowly and be patient because correcting hand positions is a long battle that cannot be resolved quickly.

3. Practice not only focusing on piano techniques but also learn to think independently, value diversified development, cultivate rich creativity, and be able to flexibly apply them while ensuring a correct foundation, forming the best hand position.

In conclusion, beginners should not pursue perfect hand positions excessively, but they should not ignore them entirely either. Otherwise, they may develop bad hand positions and playing habits, which will not only pose significant risks to future learning but also cause injuries to the hands.
