Enhancing Finger Independence and Flexibility in Piano Playing

by linzz 21 Feb 2024

Everyone knows that playing the piano requires high demands on finger independence and flexibility. To play a piece well, one must have good finger abilities, allowing each finger to play independently and flexibly.

  1. Practice Sustained Note Exercises:Practicing sustained notes can improve finger independence, muscle control, key strike accuracy and depth, including hand stability. The lifting and dropping movements should be distinct, allowing the fingers to lift higher than normal to exercise their range of motion, gradually increasing speed and frequency of lifting and dropping motions as proficiency develops.

  2. Feel the Center of Gravity of Each Finger: While playing, keep the arm relaxed. Lift one finger first to feel the direction of its center of gravity, then switch to another finger to feel the transfer of the center of gravity. Ensure that the fingers do not follow other fingers in swaying, allowing them to stably support the palm and arm, enhancing finger stability.

  3. Control the Playing Intensity: Pay attention to the intensity of the fingers during playing. When lifting the hand, avoid exerting too much force, maintaining a relaxed and comfortable state. Concentrate the sound when the fingertips touch down. Avoid collapsing the palm when playing, and ensure the arm and wrist are not stiff. Use your ears to listen to the uniformity and evenness of the playing speed.

  4. Slow Practice is Key: When initially training finger independence, it is best to practice slowly for each note. Playing too fast can easily lead to muscle tension. Lift the fingers as high as possible during practice, and after a period of time, gradually increase speed. Ensure each note is played forcefully and clearly, avoiding stiffness in the hand or wrist, and minimizing the use of the back of the hand or wrist for assistance.
