Essential Piano Maintenance: Cleaning, Disinfection, and Care Tips

by linzz 22 Feb 2024
Everyone knows that after using the piano for a period of time, a large amount of dust will accumulate on its surface. If not cleaned regularly, the dust may enter the gaps between the keys, affecting the quality of play and even causing damage. Therefore, it is necessary to clean and maintain the piano.

1. If disinfection of the keys is necessary, it is recommended to wipe them with warm soapy water diluted with water or with a solution of 1/4 vinegar and 3/4 filtered water.

2. Use a soft cotton cloth for wiping. Do not spray liquid directly onto the keys to prevent it from accidentally seeping into the gaps and causing the wood to become damp and swell.

3. Pay attention to wiping in the longitudinal direction to prevent moisture from entering the gaps. Also, avoid using color-bleeding cloths to prevent color from staining the white keys.

The above three points are considerations for key disinfection. Some piano enthusiasts may wonder how to clean and maintain the piano under normal circumstances:

1. Placement is critical.

The piano should be positioned in a well-ventilated environment. Avoid placing it where it is exposed to direct sunlight, moisture, uneven surfaces, or directly facing or backing towards doors and windows.

2. Pay attention to hygiene.

Wash your hands before playing the piano, keeping your nails short to maintain cleanliness and prevent scratching the keyboard. After each use, promptly wipe off any dust on the piano, close the keyboard cover, to maintain cleanliness to a certain extent.

3. Regular tuning is recommended.

It is suggested to tune the piano two to three times a year. However, occasional players may tune it once or twice a year. Consistent practice is essential for mastering the piano, so avoid laziness.
