Piano Playing Techniques for Beginners: Essential Tips and Exercises

by linzz 22 Feb 2024

Sharing some essential beginner piano playing techniques to help develop good playing habits.

1. Correct Sitting Posture Image:
① When playing the piano, the upper body should be upright, with no slouching at the waist. Sit on the front half of the bench, ideally at around 2/3 of its length, ensuring not all arms and thighs are on the music stand. Situate the body in the middle of the keyboard.
② Check the distance between yourself and the keys. With arms extended forward and fists relaxed, the knuckles should just touch the piano lid for the most suitable distance.

2. Rounded Hand Shape Image:

① Lightly close your right hand into a fist, then gradually and gently open your fingers. Like placing a roof on a house, raise your wrist slightly, supporting your "little house" with the fingertips of the thumb and the other four fingers.
② Repeat the same exercise with the left hand, then practice with both hands together.

3. Stable and Strong Fingertips Image:

① Lightly place the second finger of the right hand on the tip of the thumb, forming a "glasses" shape.
② Repeat the same action with the third, fourth, and fifth fingers separately.
③ Repeat this exercise with the left hand, then practice with both hands together.

4. Arm Weight:

① Sit in front of the piano with arms naturally hanging down, swinging back and forth, imagining you have the arms of a gorilla.
② Slowly lift your arms upward, feeling the weight of your arms. When your arms reach keyboard height, relax completely and let them fall back onto your lap.
③ Repeat this exercise in slow motion twice.

5. Correct Thumb Position:

① Play with the side of the thumb tip.
② Lightly place your right hand on the white keys, ensuring the side of the thumb tip touches the keys, while the other fingers gently rest on the keys.
③ Repeat the same exercise with the left hand. Pay attention to placing the thumb correctly and avoid lowering the wrist too much.
