Overcoming Piano Practice Challenges: Tips for Improving Finger Strength and Technique

by linzz 20 Feb 2024

When learning any subject or instrument, it starts from simple to difficult, from shallow to deep, and the piano is no exception. Why do fingers feel weak and sore when playing the piano?

In fact, this situation is quite common for beginners, generally for the following reasons:
(1) Excessive practice time: Some beginners want to master the piece immediately, and long periods of repetitive movements cause muscle fatigue and soreness, resulting in stiff and weak fingers.
(2) Lack of practice: Insufficient exercise and lack of piano practice lead to inadequate finger support, lack of proficiency in playing techniques, or incorrect playing posture, resulting in a lack of relaxation.
(3) Incorrect force application: Improper use of force leads to poor transmission of arm strength, resulting in stiffness in the wrists and fingers, causing soreness and weakness.

So how to improve it?
01 Proper practice time arrangement: Diligently practice with a reasonable time arrangement, muscles can be exercised without causing excessive fatigue, thus improving arm or wrist soreness, and fingers will be more powerful when playing.

02 Learn to relax: Beginners may feel soreness due to incorrect posture and lack of relaxation during piano practice. Therefore, it is necessary to learn how to relax properly.

03 Correct force application: Piano technique involves not only finger force but also the force operation from fingertips to shoulders. Only by correctly learning the force application and force acceptance of each part can the problem be fundamentally solved.

04 Train finger support: For beginners, exercises such as finger exercises and chord practices can train hand and finger support, allowing a clearer understanding of the weight of the arm. Long-term training can also form a relatively stable hand shape, which helps strengthen weak fingers and improve finger independence.
