Rethinking Talent: The Essence of Piano Learning

by linzz 20 Feb 2024

When someone excels in a certain field, industry, or activity and demonstrates fast progress, people often attribute it to "talent." Indeed, talent plays a role in everything we do, including learning the piano. But is talent really that important when it comes to learning the piano?

01. Preconceptions before Piano Learning

Some parents or adult friends who want to learn the piano often have doubts before starting: Do they have the talent for learning the piano? In fact, learning the piano has become increasingly common nowadays, not only among children and young people but also among many older adults. Learning the piano is a way to enhance one's temperament, cognition, imagination, and creativity. In the face of such utility, talent is negligible.

02. There's No Such Thing as "Inborn Talent"

Mozart once said, "I practice the piano for eight hours every day, but people use the word 'genius' to overshadow my efforts." No one is truly "naturally gifted." Instead of fixating on whether one has talent, it's better to consider whether one can devote sweat and effort to piano learning and whether one can persevere.

03. Passion Matters More

Learning the piano should stem from passion rather than necessarily aiming to become a pianist. While talent is important for pianists, not every piano learner will become a professional pianist. Enjoying the piano and wanting to learn it are rights enjoyed by everyone, and this does not depend on "talent."

So, when it comes to learning the piano, don't dwell on talent. It's really not that important. Trust that time will prove everything. Enjoy the process of playing the piano, and you'll feel the charm it brings.
